Choose the number of programmes playing at once

Start with the busiest ordinary viewing period in your household. One person watching a film in the sitting room while someone else watches another programme upstairs means two active streams. A television in each room does not necessarily mean you need a connection for every room: what matters is whether those televisions are playing at the same time.

A phone used after the main television has been switched off is a different case from a phone used while the television continues playing. Count that overlap honestly. A larger allowance can make overlapping viewing more convenient, but it does not make the picture sharper or improve the Wi-Fi connection.

Separate the three quantities you may see in an offer: devices on which the app is installed, devices registered to an account, and simultaneous playback sessions. They are not interchangeable. If recording, picture-in-picture or another feature matters, ask how that activity is counted under the applicable account terms. Choose the screen allowance first; then compare durations within that same allowance.

02

The complete euro price matrix

Each cell is the total for one duration and one concurrent-stream allowance. Read across a row to compare household sizes, or down a column to compare commitment lengths for the same use. The figures do not include an assumed television, streaming box or separately purchased player licence.

For example, the one-stream annual reference is €49.99, while the two-stream annual reference is €79.99. The lower figure is not the price of the two-stream combination. An order summary should always keep duration, stream count, currency and full total together so the selected product is unambiguous.

Match the duration to the period you expect to use

Among regular subscription plans, one month is the shortest term and has the lowest initial total within each stream allowance. It can suit a short, defined need or a household still deciding whether app-based viewing fits its routine. It is not automatically a free trial, and a shorter period does not remove the need for a compatible device.

Three months provides a middle step for someone who expects to use the account for a season of ordinary viewing but does not want a six- or twelve-month commitment. Six months covers a longer known period without paying the annual total upfront. These descriptions are planning examples, not promises about particular sporting seasons or programme availability.

Twelve months has the lowest divided monthly figure in this matrix, but the entire annual reference is an upfront commitment, not twelve small monthly payments. It is most relevant to compare after the household knows its screen needs and everyday setup. A low arithmetic rate has little value if the account will sit unused for much of the period.

Think in calendar terms: when would viewing start, how long is it genuinely needed, and are any long absences expected? The final offer must specify its start rule. Do not assume unused time pauses automatically or that a longer plan can be divided among different homes.

04

Four ordinary household choices

These examples illustrate how to choose a comparison column and period. They do not prescribe the same answer for every household or establish programme inclusion. Replace the viewing pattern with your own before reading the matrix.

05

Understand the monthly equivalent without confusing it with billing

Dividing the total by the number of months is useful for comparing like-for-like options. It does not turn a prepaid plan into a monthly billing arrangement. The table below shows rounded arithmetic equivalents for the reference totals; use the full total above when assessing the amount committed.

Compare within a stream-count column. A three-stream annual figure can be lower per month than a one-stream monthly purchase while still requiring a larger total payment. That is a difference in both allowance and duration, so it should not be described as a simple replacement of the same product.

Rounding also matters. Multiplying a displayed two-decimal monthly equivalent back by the term can differ slightly from the original total. The original plan total remains the reference figure, not a reconstructed amount based on the rounded rate.

Worked example: one viewer choosing an annual period

Suppose a household needs one active stream and expects to watch throughout the year. At the displayed reference figures, twelve separate €8.99 one-month periods would total €107.88. Four €17.99 three-month periods would total €71.96, and two €27.99 six-month periods would total €55.98. The twelve-month reference is €49.99.

Those are arithmetic comparisons using unchanged reference prices and equivalent scope, not a promise about future renewal prices. They show why the way a year is purchased affects the total. They also show that the difference between two six-month periods and one annual period is €5.99, much smaller than the difference between twelve monthly periods and one annual period.

The practical question is whether committing to a full year is worth the additional upfront payment compared with the shorter option being considered. If you only need several months, buying a year because its divided rate is low may still cost more overall. Start with the actual period of use, then compare the relevant totals.

For a household already using Saorview and official Irish players, also identify what the paid account would add during that period. Do not count programmes already available through another route as a new benefit unless the different access method genuinely improves the routine.

07

Worked example: two rooms, three installed devices

Imagine a sitting-room television, an upstairs television and a phone. If the two televisions regularly show different programmes together but the phone is used only after one TV session ends, the maximum ordinary overlap is two streams. Three installed apps have not automatically created a three-stream requirement.

At the annual reference figures, moving from one stream to two changes the total from €49.99 to €79.99, a €30 difference for the period. Moving from two streams to three changes it by €20. These figures help compare the allowance required, but the account's device-registration and household rules still need to match the intended arrangement.

Now consider a different evening: both televisions remain on while someone starts another programme on the phone. That is three active programmes. Either stop an existing session or select an allowance that permits the overlap. Do not use repeated disconnections as a normal way of managing an undersized account.

Network capacity is a separate part of this example. If the upstairs picture pauses while the sitting room remains stable, test that room's local connection. Buying a third stream will not extend Wi-Fi coverage. If the second session is explicitly rejected by the account, investigate the allowance rather than replacing the router.

08

Build the first-period total around equipment you actually need

Put the subscription reference on the first line of a worksheet. Add a player licence only if the chosen software requires one, and identify whether it is a one-time charge, a recurring fee or a per-device purchase. Add a streaming device only if the existing television cannot run a suitable supported app.

Do not invent a hardware expense for a household whose current equipment is sufficient. Equally, do not hide necessary equipment behind a low subscription headline. A supported external device can be a practical way to keep an older television, but its cost and remote-control routine belong in the comparison.

For an illustrative calculation, if the subscription total is S, a necessary player licence L and new equipment H, the first-period outlay would be S + L + H. On a later period, H might not recur, while the licence may or may not recur according to its own terms. Use actual supplier quotes in those fields rather than assumed prices.

Keep the broadband bill in context. If it already supports work, calls and other household use, the entire bill is not a new IPTV expense. If a connection change is genuinely needed, compare that incremental cost separately and base the decision on the connection reaching the television.

09

Choose the device route before paying for a long period

Identify the exact television or streaming-device model and the operating system it uses. Samsung, LG, Fire TV, Google TV and Apple TV do not share one universal app store. A mobile player with the right name is not evidence that the television version exists or supports the same account method.

Use the supported installation route and check whether the player requires its own activation. Then try the everyday tasks that matter: opening favourites, navigating the guide, choosing subtitles and returning to the programme after standby. A household member should be able to repeat those steps without the person who configured the device standing beside them.

If a second room is part of the plan, perform the same setup check there. Do not copy a success on one TV to a different model. The second screen may have a different app, remote or wireless path even though both televisions are in the same house.

The device guides on this site cover these distinct routes. Use the compatibility guide to decide which one applies, then the installation guide for the sequence. The outcome should be a usable screen, not merely an installed icon.

10

Decide which viewing features change the value for your household

Start with a compact essentials list rather than the longest possible catalogue. Name the programmes or events that matter, whether they are needed live or later, and the required language or accessibility track. The relevant offer must answer those specific needs; a channel total alone cannot do so.

Replay, recording and an electronic programme guide are different features. A guide can list a broadcast without providing a recording of it. A player may display a replay control even when a particular source has no available archive. Use the exact programme and supported device when evaluating the feature.

For films or series, check the version and episode needed, along with audio and subtitles. For live viewing, include the correct regional feed and timing where relevant. These requirements help distinguish two plans that appear similar in a short price table.

Keep official RTÉ Player, TG4 Player, Virgin Media Play and Saorview options in the same household map. Their mention here is not an inclusion claim for HexaTV. They provide a useful baseline for deciding what an additional account should contribute.

11

Make the first setup session small and repeatable

After legitimate account delivery, the useful first sequence is to open the supported app, add the supplied account through its documented method, load the catalogue and try one known available programme. Check sound and the required captions before organising a large favourites list.

Then test the intended simultaneous use within the account allowance. Start the second permitted session deliberately and observe both screens. If one stops, retain the actual message. If both run but one buffers, keep the device and network context with the observation. These two outcomes call for different next steps.

For an Irish home using a distant upstairs Wi-Fi connection, a supported temporary Ethernet comparison can help separate wireless performance from the content account. Use a safe cable route and change only the relevant connection where practical. Do not run a large speed test at the same time and call the result an ordinary viewing baseline.

Save a short non-secret setup note: device, app, connection and how to open the right input. Keep passwords and complete playlist addresses in a private credential location, not on the instruction card left beside the television.

12

Review changes and renewal as separate decisions

Household needs can change during a subscription period. A replacement television may require another app licence; a new simultaneous viewer may require a different allowance; a move may change the available connection. Ask for the relevant change process before assuming an upgrade, transfer or pause is included.

For any proposed change, keep the effective date, revised allowance and complete additional total together. Do not assume that changing a player licence also changes the content account, or that installing an app on a new device automatically removes the old session.

At renewal, compare the current household need with the new offer. Check the next period's total, currency, stream count and start rule rather than relying on an old receipt. If the household mainly used other services, that is relevant to whether renewal is worthwhile.

A shorter next period may fit a known change of circumstances even if the annual arithmetic rate is lower. The best duration is the one that matches the expected use and the terms being accepted, not the one with the smallest divided number.

13

Keep the selected combination clear through the order journey

The on-site journey is straightforward: select the duration and stream allowance, review the complete order, complete the approved payment process and receive private access details after payment verification. The combination shown in the summary should match the account delivered.

Before any payment, the customer needs the supplier's applicable terms, the full amount and currency, and the intended start and delivery process. A browser returning from a payment page is not itself a receipt. Use the order's verified status and reference to distinguish a pending transaction from completed payment.

Keep the order reference available for support, while protecting the access code or account secret. A useful support message can identify the order and symptom without publishing credentials. Player installation questions and content-account questions may have different responsible suppliers, so include the actual app name.

To prepare a choice now, use the annual page for a longer-period comparison, the multi-screen guide for simultaneous use, and the device guides for setup. The plan decision becomes concrete when the household can name the duration, active screens, essential viewing and equipment it intends to use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers before you choose.

Is the divided monthly figure a monthly payment?+

No. It is the total divided by the number of months for comparison. A prepaid three-, six- or twelve-month option has its own full total; the final order must state the actual billing arrangement.

Do four installed devices require four streams?+

Only if four programmes will play at the same time and the account permits that arrangement. Installed devices, registered devices and active sessions are different limits. Choose from ordinary simultaneous use and the actual account terms.

Does a bigger screen allowance improve picture quality?+

No. It changes permitted concurrency. Picture quality also depends on the supplied source, supported app and device, display and connection. A screen-count upgrade does not repair weak Wi-Fi.

Can an older TV be used?+

Possibly, through a compatible external streaming device connected to an appropriate input. Confirm the exact app, device and display requirements, and include the equipment cost and remote-control routine before comparing totals.

Which total should I use when comparing a year?+

Hold the stream allowance constant and compare the full cost of the periods you would actually buy. The annual one-stream reference is €49.99; repeated shorter periods have different arithmetic totals and may have different future renewal conditions.

Is a player licence included automatically?+

No such inclusion is assumed. Read the chosen player's own licence terms and keep its charge separate from the content subscription. Licence transfer and account device rules can also differ.
